Amazon Games, Orange County is seeking an experienced and talented level artist to work closely with the art and design team to build stunning game environments. In this role, you are directly responsible for crafting and building our worlds by laying out levels, composing environments, asset creation, environmental storytelling, set dressing and terrain sculpting. You will need to combine a strong aesthetic sense in creating visually interesting spaces with a solid understanding of how gameplay is affected by level art. You will also need to possess the technical skills to ensure that your spaces work within the constraints of the game technology.

Responsibilities:

  • Lay out and build levels, from initial block-out to final polish
  • Prototype rough layouts quickly and efficiently
  • Tell deep and meaningful stories within the environment.
  • Build spaces with strong visual composition and interesting gameplay space.
  • Create game art assets of exceptional quality.
  • Work with the art team to ensure artistic unity across the entire project.
  • Work with the design team to make gameplay and levels function harmoniously.
  • Excel at maintaining consistent aesthetic and technical quality in all environments.
  • Optimize environments for performance and memory.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1+ years’ experience in the game industry
  • 1+ shipped AAA title.
  • Online portfolio

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art or in related field
  • Strong foundational skills including composition, design, and color theory.
  • Highly Proficient in major 3D software packages (Max/Maya and Zbrush/Mudbox)
  • Highly Proficient using Adobe Photoshop.
  • Expert knowledge of at least one Game Engine (CryEngine, Unreal, or equivalent)
  • Familiarity with modular level construction
  • Advanced understanding of Physically Based Shading materials and lighting.
  • Advanced skills in hard-surface and organic modeling
  • Self-motivated problem solver, ability to work well independently.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Quixel or Substance Designer skills a plus.
  • Traditional art skills (figure drawing, landscape, painting, composition, perspective, etc.) a plus.
  • Understanding of procedural art systems in games.
  • Experience working with outsourcing a plus.
  • Architectural knowledge.
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role.
  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role.
