This is a senior role between Payroll and HR. This position is responsible for performing a variety of complex and specialized administrative processing relating to Payroll while playing a vital role in the daily HR operations of the company, particularly in managing regulatory reporting requirements and HR audits, focusing on process improvement opportunities. Role can be based in Irvine or San Francisco.


  • Oversee and assist with payroll-related functions including but not limited to processing of payroll data, tax changes, accruals, wage garnishments, deductions, direct deposit, manual checks, verification, government reports, and audit.
  • Develop, implement, and manage payroll practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Review employee action changes and audit for accuracy ensuring the appropriate adjustments are made, such as retro pay, pay adjustment for new hires, and termination pays.
  • Review time and attendance records, maintain staff PTO time, and ensure all the HR/Payroll documents have been completed/processed on a timely basis.
  • Process off-cycle payrolls if needed. Resolve discrepancies with payroll and/or benefit information and/or documentation.
  • Manage one Payroll employee directly.
  • Guide payroll related transactions associated with stock options or benefits related data requirements.
  • Assist in hiring process, including but not limited to negotiating salary offers, and creating job descriptions, issuing offer letters, and providing hiring recommendations.
  • Administrate HR policies, procedures, and practices in accordance with stated corporate objectives and federal and state legal requirements.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding the organization’s processes, policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Assist in administration of company benefits programs, workers’ compensation, new hire orientation, and employee recognition program.
  • Identify potential employee-relations issues, assist with employee-relations activities and investigations of allegations regarding violations of policies, and make recommendations to management.
  • Conduct exit interviews with employees, coordinate administration of unemployment claims, and communicate findings to management.
  • Travel required up to 5% of the time.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of payroll experience.
  • 4+ years of Ultimate Software’s UltiPro experience required.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite. Familiarity with ADP.
  • Working knowledge of HR and multi-state payroll, payroll laws and regulations, and how to apply them to daily transactions.
  • HR certification is a plus.
  • Experience in a lead or managerial capacity.
  • Good judgement with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Ability to work independently, and in a team environment.
  • Good time management skills with ability to prioritize.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service and organizational skills with extreme attention to detail.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and work well under pressure in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
