Department Athletics: Intramural/Club Sports

Position Summary

The Coordinator, Competitive Sports will provide leadership for Club and Intramural Sports; to administer and promote the programs to align with the University’s mission. The Coordinator will run an intramural sports program at the University open to students, faculty and staff. In addition, the Coordinator will oversee half of the Club Sports team at the University. The Coordinator will also work with the Assistant Athletic Director, Campus Recreation and Assistant Director, Campus Recreation in building a comprehensive recreation program consisting of aquatics, club sports, esports, fitness, informal recreation, intramural sports and outdoor adventures.

Education/Experience

Master’s degree in Recreation, Management, or related area, plus one year of successful experience in higher education to include development and implementation of a successful recreation program, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Valid driver license with good driving record: must be insurable.

Knowledge/Skills/Ability

  • Ability to develop, and administer program components including training, event management, and adherence to regulations.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required and a strong commitment to student development.
  • Skill in public relations; training or instructing student staffs; interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to organize and plan events.
  • Ability to manage a budget; analyze situations and develop solutions; provide leadership and direction.
  • Working knowledge of NIRSA rules and the ability to teach critical skills, regulations, strategies and training techniques.
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of the University, and NIRSA.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both within and outside the University including, but not limited to participants, workers, parents, full and part-time campus recreation staff, and athletic department staff.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership to coaches, students and workers.
  • Travel is a requirement of this position.
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.

Physical Requirements

Medium work: Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Position involves both inside sedentary work and work on different fitness environments while training and overseeing recreational activities. Evening and weekend hours in all types of weather, with travel between campuses is necessary. Lifting required (i.e. – setup of scorer’s table, etc.), some manual labor is expected.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the daily operations of the entire Intramural Sports program and half of the Club Sports teams to include marketing of programs and job opportunities to students, management of student staff, scheduling, counseling, equipment inventory, office work, budget preparation, working with sports information staff, marketing and digital communication staff, student services personnel and athletics staff.
  • Provide leadership for the programs; establish recruitment strategies for coaches, participants and workers; oversee and supervise coaches and student workers.
  • Develop strategies to foster academic progress of student work staff.
  • Maintain and care for equipment.
  • Assists the Assistant Athletic Director, Campus Recreation and Assistant Director, Campus Recreation in building and evaluating a comprehensive recreation program consisting of aquatics, club sports, esports, fitness, informal recreation, intramural sports and outdoor adventures.
  • Assists the Assistant Athletic Director, Campus Recreation and Assistant Director, Campus Recreation with development of annual budget.
  • Travel for conferences and work nights, weekends, and holidays, as necessary.
  • May perform marketing or public relations duties to promote the program such as maintaining web pages and planning and implementing promotional activities and materials.
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
